Tummy Time & Newborn Toys 0–6 Months
Those first six months go by so fast, don’t they? One day you’re bringing your little one home, and before you know it, they’re lifting their head during tummy time like a tiny superhero in training.
This is where I’ve pulled together everything I’ve found useful for that early stage — toys and tools that actually make sense for a newborn’s world. At this age, babies aren’t chasing balls or stacking blocks. They’re just starting to notice contrast, reach for sound, and build the neck and shoulder strength they’ll need later for sitting and crawling.
Tummy time mats with crinkly fabric and little mirrors are a favourite in this section—my own kids would stare at their reflection for a good five minutes, which felt like forever when you’re trying to get them to lift their chin off the mat. High-contrast black-and-white toys also show up a lot here, because newborn eyes see bold patterns far better than pastel colours in the beginning.
You’ll also find soft rattles, gentle sensory toys, and simple hanging arches—nothing overwhelming, nothing with a hundred buttons. Just things that give a young baby a reason to look, listen, and slowly start reaching.
I’ve picked these based on what worked at home in Kerala, with the humidity and the constant flow of relatives dropping in to play with the baby too. If something felt fussy to clean or too flimsy to survive a toddler sibling’s curiosity, it didn’t make the cut.
Browse through, and if you’re not sure where to start, the tummy time mats are usually the easiest first pick.
